Default 72 sporty won't start

First try using this. I read all entries about starting problems. All are good but I still need help. My sportster will start sometimes but most of the time the starter just spins like solenoid is not engaged. New solenoid and battery with still the same problem. I think it is electrical. Any suggestions.

The most common cause is a battery not fully charged. I know you have a new battery, but did you fully charge it before installing it in the bike? The counter guys often say that it is ready to go out of the box. I never seriously listen to that.

Yes, I used a trickle charge overnight. Battery is reading 12.78 volts.

Being it's a 1972 model, don't you have a kick start on it?
If so, have you tried the kick starter?
If it starts with that then the problem is your Bendix drive is busted.

With the primary cover removed check the action of item 20 (the pinion gear) which is also shown on the assembly item 14 .
See illustration........

This gear should lock in a Clockwise direction and ratchet in a CCW direction.
What happens is the gear will malfunction and spin in both directions. The result is it will fail to turn the clutch basket gear and the engine.

When this happens, the fix is a new pinion gear (item 20). I previously called this a Bendix drive but this gear is what I was referring to.

After taking the starter housing apart it was the starter clutch. By hand when it was together it appeared to be good. Thanks all for the advice

The starter clutch ? I am not sure which item you are referring to.
What item number on the diagram did you replace?

Prob the bendix as it is a one way clutch. In the past I've heard it referred to as that a few times.
