Cam bearings
It looks like someone buggered this up pulling the cam bearings. Is there something I should do to this exposed cast aluminum to keep little pieces from breaking off in the case? What is the red stuff coating the rough cast aluminum on the bottom half of the crank housing?

that looks odd...maybe the PO welded up some spider cracks around the bores there? You can Dremel tool grind those edges smooth...the casting should not flake off....is there any minor cracks around the cam journal cores????
I had a case half with re-welded cam journals.....it was a fix for cracks around the journal...

No other cracks and the bearings were in nice and tight before I pressed them out. My theory is maybe a gear puller was used and the feet did that. So when smoothed out, I shouldn't worry about the pours aluminum?

I've seen discussions of the red stuff, but can't remember what it is. It serves to reduce the porosity of the aluminum and prevent the oil from penetrating and coming out the other side (the outside).
Edit: It's called glyptal. ( http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/s....php?t=1018719)

When you dremel off the edges of the bores, do not touch the bore inside diameter. I might even just scrape the edges clean with a knife and not dremel them. If the case already had bearing in it and the edges didn't crack, then they are not likely to crack now. Make sure the new bearings are centered in the wall on the smooth bearing bore - not hanging out over the rough edges. I think your manual has some information on the position of the newly installed bearings.

It looks like the bearings have been pressed from the outside towards the inside of the caseing and breaking off the little locating flanges. The bearings must always be pulled OUTWARDS, some locktite may be necessary to stop the new bearings from wandering inwards towards the rotating flywheel which would equal disaster..........Davi.

Patrick, (the french owl) has a different fix for this as he had difficulties with locktite for this application in the past.........Davi.

When I cracked my 57 cases, presumably for the first time ever, the inside was coated. Many engine builders still do it. Early aluminum casting can weep. You get oil coming right through the cases.
