Two foot flame out of my Super E
Hey guys, I've got a problem. I put a new S&S Super E on my '74 XLCH and it keeps backfiring through the carb on kick. So its REALLY hard to start it. It seems to be sparking to soon. The Super E replaced an old Bendix/Zenith, because I did a dumbass move and tried adjusting it one night and and coudn't get it back to normal and it wouldn't start. While a 2' flame kinda looks cool, I'd much rather be riding. I can't even reliably get it going to check the timing. Please help.

Yep
Yep, the flame is with factory settings. In fact, I am using that exact page along with the directions from S7S that came with the carb. tomorrow I'm going to put in new plugs. I think it'll start with new plugs but it foul 'em. So I also just changed the intermediate and main jet down leaner.

I had the same with my S&S it took a while to dial it in but it was worth it. Main thing I learnt was that every bike and carb are different and even the same type carb on the same bike will require slightly different jets!! Change the Intermediate so that your mixture screw is out about 1 - 1 1/2 turns then let the bike 'talk to you' pipe colour is a good way, brown or blue, how much of the pipe at what speed. The main dosen't come in till about 3000 - 3500 rpm. Do all of this with the accelorator pump 'off' though, then dial that in till you can take-off with no flat spot.

Try to static time the engine and check for intake leaks. If the bike was running before and all you did was change the carb, the timing should be at least close enough to start. I would check the intake.

Don't know what you have for ignition, but if its points check the mechanical advance, sounds like timing is out of whack.

Why did you try adjusting the carb in the first place thats the question????
This is what I would do In this order
1 check out my pionts and advancer make sure everything is functioning properly
2 check the timing "posted in sticky" very detailed great post
3 make sure you have everything tight and sealed "carb & intake" again posted in sticky
4 nad lastly id check that one of yer valves hasn't tightened up due to vibration.
charge up yer battery so you get a good strong spark and start her up. as an after thought id also go over the s&s booklet on setting up your new carb be sure that your useing the correct size jets for your application the have a neat lil chart with jet size recommendations and starting positions on the adjusting needles. please keep me informed on your progress id like to know why your bike is acting up.
