its white but i cant see where it goes,

The white wire comes out of the run/stop switch and carries power to your starter button and to your coil.

the power is there to the starter, it turns over, so i presume this can be put straight to one side of the coil,
but which side? how do i tell, ?

its all new to me im afraid

You should have a white wire coming out of the coil don't you? There are two wires coming out of the coil that go to the ignition module (blue) and the tach (purple...if you have a tach). The other post should have two white wires going to it. That is what my schematic shows....would have to see it in person.

Make sure you get some heat shrink tubing to cover those connections. If your using tape you'll be re-doing it in another year or so. Do it right once.
