To leave it run out of fuel; Or not?
Was drinking some brew with a buddy and don't know what brought the subject up; But he told me he had been taught to always close the petcock and let the engine run out of fuel before parking it for the night? I never heard that one...Any opinions or facts for this?

I never do. Never have heard it either. if the bike didnt have a shut off, sure. But its designed with one. on top of that when you start it next time you will be turning the motor till the carb fills up and sends fuel to the bike. Not a good idea if you ask me.

I do it on my dirt bike only because I don't want the oil separating out of the fuel and laying in the bottom of the carb if the bike is gonna sit for a week or so...
1) it can clog the jets
2) separated fuel will kill a 2 stroke engine fast
but with straight gas, I don't see the point.

if the bike is going to sit for a long time it'll stop from evaporating and causing the varnish effect but it's not days. In the fall when the rides are long time in between I run it dry but it's just something I had started. When it comes time to start you just turn fuel and then take a look at the bike. Once you did your once over and made sure everything is tight then you are sure the bowl or bowls will be full......

I know the 04-06s have a vacume shut off so even if you turn the petcock to on, till you crank it its not really turned on and no fuel flows to the bowl.At least with the factory petcock.

Always do. The SU instructions say to. Just turn it on a few seconds before hitting the button, no problem.
