Having trouble getting parts
Anyone else have this issue? I placed an order online on the main Harley website on the 9th, nothing has shipped yet. I have been to a few dealers in the area and it's the same story. "Oh I don't have x in stock, I have some on order for next week" or whatever it is that they say.
It's not like I'm trying to get anything out of the ordinary. I just need an OEM air filter to complete the servicing I wanna do. Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there some secret to getting parts that I don't know about?

Can't believe the dealers wouldn't have a stock A/C filter in stock. They make plenty of money replacing them.
I have 4 stock spares but went to K&N.

Try J&P. If you need it, they can usually get it to you overnight. Also, look at some of our supporting vendors. They can probably get you the stuff quicker and cheaper than a dealer.
Oh, and for an airfilter, if you're not going stage 1, buy a K&N or similar filter that you can wash and reuse. It'll save you money in the long run.

This is what is driving me nuts. They typically service other bikes with the OEM filters, yet they don't have them in stock to sell?

I quickly ran through J&P earlier and the filter elements they had on the site (that I saw) were matched with high performance parts.
I just have some slip-on mufflers, no other performance mods so I am assuming the K&N wouldn't screw anything up. I just ordered it for next day shipping off of K&N's website.
This thread is mostly a rant, but now I will check out the vendors on the site for more parts in the future.

I used to run just a K&N with slip-ons and it was fine. I then went the NRHS Hurricane Flow route and 1200 conversion and had to rejet.
But, as far as parts go, I won't go to the dealer. I'll hit up my local Indy and then hit up the supporting vendors from here. I'd rather give them my money anyway.

+1
I totally agree. The Harley Dealers near me will never see my money. My Indy can get me whatever I want, from an air cleaner to a new Fat Boy.

I have two semi-local dealers I visit for parts I need in a hurry. One of them carries just about NOTHING for the older frame-mount Sportsters, while the other has had everything in stock that I need. Needless to say, I know who to call first, even if they are a bit further way.
This past weekend I even managed to pick up a Screamin' Eagle coil that was in stock.

I felt spoiled when I lived in Milwaukee. It seemed like every dealer in the area had just about every part for my bike.

HD farmed out their parts distribution to a 3rd party a few years ago. Looked good on the balance sheet for the investors, screws over everyone else. I wouldn't blame the dealer for not having what you need, they probably have very limited control over it. A buddy of mine who works at a HD shop says its not uncommon to see bikes in for service waiting for a month for parts from HD. They've also started relying on companies like J&P and Dennis Kirk for parts just so they can get stuff through the shop.
