Default Exhaust Backfire issue

I have a 98 XL 1200 which just started backfiring thru the exhaust between shifts and just reving it in neutral when the rpms go down. Tried carb and timing adjmnts but it did nothing. It always did backfire a little upon deceleration, but not the between shift thing or just reving it in neutral. Plugs look real clean and not really brown . Also when I pull out the choke knob and rev it the backfiring will stop, but I could not adjust it richer with the air/fuel screw as it really did not change anything. The bike starts and runs great otherwise. Any ideas?

Check the exhaust gaskets and intake seals. While the bike is running spray some wd-40 near the intake seals on the heads and if the rpms change, you have a leak. I don't remember how to check the exhaust gaskets but those can cause the bike to run abit lean. Is your bike stock?
