Default 1975 xlh oil leak

I just brought home my sportster today and its leaking oil. Sometimes it wont leak at all and sometimes it will pretty bad. It seems to be coming from what looks like an over flow that attaches to the cam cover right beside the generator. After i lost quite a bit of oil, the dipstick just it was still full. Could this simply be that there was too much oil in it or why is it leaking so bad?
