Default Great...and F**ing Great

I just finished putting a Super E on my XLCR. The S&S factory settings were perfect, no changing of jets, and with about 5 minutes of tuning, the bike runs awesome - that would be the GREAT part. The last bolt to be tightened was the carb support bracket on the front intake lifter block. Just a little more pressure and...SNAP! It shears off leaving the broken stud still in the lifter block...as I said, F**ing Great. The question is now, can I get a stud puller to back out the broken tip, or do I have to remove the cam cover, cams, drill out the stud, put in a helicoil, re-tap it, etc. The top of the broken stud is only about 1/8 inch down in the lifter block. What do you guys think?

since you have boken it off , you might get lucky and get it out with a easy out, auto stores sell them and the proper drill bit take your time and go easy should back out, Be sure to drill as closly to the center of bolt as you can. Good luck , can be a bitch

Yeah ... i would definitely try the "easy out" before disassembling anything.

you know I got to thinking about it, you didn't say what year, if it is after 77, you can remove the pushrod and roll the motor over as you would to adjust your valves and you should be able pull the lifter block up , it will require a little effort, and then turn the broken stud out with a vice grip.... if it is a 76 or earlier they are pressed in and a small puller will pull the block. when done don't forget to readjust that valve and get a shorter bolt

It's a '77, but after I looked things over, I think that the stud extractor will work. If not, I'll just have to pull the cam cover - heck, I was thinking about hotter cams anyway.

Definately pull the lifter block & use vice grips. Easy fix.

Popped it out with a stud extractor, no drama at all. Thanks for all the help/advice.

No Drama? What's the fun if no drama? If there was no drama, then my niece wouldn't be a queen.
