Last night, when I was apparently brain dead, I was sure the motor rotated CW. Since I am presently Sportsterless, I was not able to just go look. So, I emailed Art Northrup, Jr. and he sent me this link. I was only 1/2 right and thus the misdirection on the timing plate rotation.

there are two openings in the pick up : one round and one long. it was bolt on the long one but close to the round one.

It's all a matter of perspective... A train can be coming or going, depending on where you are standing when looking at it.

Work is picking up, got to take a hiatus from the forum for a bit. I think once Tara gets her timing dialed in (if it is not already), she will be running good.

so doc and wedge, these are the news :
the odd sound was my primary chain, much too tight : the lesson is that i will now tight when hot, not cold
i put some more advance on the timing turning slightly cw the pick up, and it comes right at the end of the slot : result is idle was much better, but start pinging when open throttle, so i put it back in original position

Well, now that you know that it pings when you advance it, then all you need to do is play with it until you can advance it as far as possible without it pinging, then maybe back it off a degree.

Glad you found the primary chain noise, before the chain stretched
What you did for the timing is what I would do...as far advanced as possible, without pinging. If you only backed off as much as you needed to, you are at your optimum timing: Maximum burn time for efficiency and power.
The only time that method is not useful is tuning at higher altitude. I could not have done that when I lived in Flagstaff (almost 7,000 feet), as it would have pinged at lower altitudes. When I did it at 900 feet, it was never an issue.
This is also based upon consistent fuel grade. You could not time that way and then run lower octane fuel.
How does the bike now feel? Good over all response?

LOL, our minds were on the exact same track, at the same time!
Almost got a new bike, yesterday, but the dealer sold it while I was making the inquiry: 2008 (yep, EFI...got to eat my words, sometimes), just under 10K miles for $5,295 (standard height 883). Looked very stock (what I want to start with) and very clean...even good tires. Lots of customs available, but not mid-controls. I took my truck to my middle daughter in Colorado, early May...so, I now have room in the garage, next to my wife's SUV...
Been checking dealers in Ventura County, CA and Las Vegas Valley, NV...some don't even have a used Sportster. Even checked Cycle Trader and Craig's List. One's of interest on the forum are either too far away or posted so long ago they are probably sold.

Well, ya know what they say (whoever they are)... Great minds...
Problem is that the same logic applies to IDIOTS too
I could help you pull that EFI off and throw it in the trash (or we could have a bon-fire) with it as the centerpiece?

Oh, timing chain... Get the bike HOT...
Then adjust it while the bike is idling. Tighten it until it starts to complain (listen very close for this) then back it off 1/4 turn and lock it down.
