Crankshaft seal may be allowing cross contamination, but it usually works in the reverse. I haven't gotten into my '72 I.H. yet, (been under a blanket since '89, so I'm not well versed on them.

We have and excellant group of Ironhead riders that know every nook and cranny of I.H.'s, they'll be along shortly, be patient. When I pull the blanket off mine it will be comforting to know the skills and experiences they have shared, and I know they will be a big help for me.

That was my thought exactly, usually its a crankseal failure and the crankcase pressure pushes engine oil out to the primary cavity.

If the tranny vent is plugged (dirt, bugs, etc etc) the tranny can build up presure from the air expanding when it gets warm. (trust me, I pinched the hose they used on the '86's under the seat when I put the seat back on.....)
I'm not saying that's your problem, but it may be someplace to start at.

Could be sprocket shaft seal.
Could be oil transfer valve (between primary and crankcase).
Both those are easy to fix. More info on the oil transfer valve over in the Ironhead section.
If you post future queries in the Ironhead section you will get more response.
