Yes the adventurer would need to be of good character and be charming and entertaining, and only drink too much beer when the host does

Well, let's try to estimate the cost...

Fuel estimate about 20 bucks a day in the US/Canada/Mexico/South America, and about 50 bucks a day in Europe. Estimate that you'll be riding 200 days of the year.

200/2=100

200x20=4000
200x50=10000

Round trip ticket to London from Newark about 600
Round trip ticket from london to paris about 240

Estimate 150 nights in hotel rooms if you don't like camping.. or the weather doesn't permit it...

at a decent hotel...125/night...18,750
at a bargain hotel/motel 85/night...12,750
at a fleabag motel...40/night....6000
at a campsite if you do like camping...10/night...1500

Food for those 150 days just as an estimate on the low side, since your host may or may not provide you with 2 or 3 meals...Breakfast 8.00 lunch 10.00 dinner 15.00...comes to 4950

Fuel 14000
Airfare 840
campsite or lodging 1500 - 18750
Food ~4950

That comes to 21,290

Of course this doesn't cover costs of incendentals like personal care products, maintenance or repair costs on your bike during the trip, a new set of tires or two, etc. or even your fixed costs/bills that you have to keep up at your home. It also doesn't consider the cost of you taking a year off of work,,,if you work.

Too rich for my blood right now...maybe if I can ever retire....and be without rent or a mortgage...and not in a relationship....

I don't know anybody that could drop everything and do this right now, except perhaps my dad. And motorcycles scare tha crap outta him....... I think my mom would love to get him outta the house for a year!

And if the trip is to include both Europe and North America I don't see the bike shipping cost included either. Unless of course your European hosts also provide you with a bike

Thats funny, we need someone like your Dad, Who rides.

I don't think that I would need 150 out of 365 days in a Hotel or even camping. For this to work, the XlFer would need a lot of support from the forum members.

You wouldn't have to fly from London to Paris you can drive they have a tunnel across the channel don't they? But I agree it would be a blast but very expensive.

It's a train in the tunnel, No driving thru but that or a ferry is preferable to flying(and cheaper).
This sounds a great idea. Perhaps HD or others would sponser part or all of the costs!!! Last frontier etc.

I actually contemplated doing a ride like this after I retired from the army in 2005 but some things got in the way.

I am definately up for being a host and maybe more!!

You know it is a real neat idea!

But, how many folks are willing to have their families share their home with someone they met on the 'net...

But still a great idea!

If I had the sort of job/income that would allow me this kind of free time, I'd be doing it right now. I've got the writing skills, I'm personable and polite, and (since I cut off my hair) I'm even the kind of guy that women could bring home to the parents.

I'm hoping that I might meet a few of you folks between Boulder and Seattle come May. I'll be rolling out probably on the 19th/20th and returning on the 29th/30th with an academic conference in between. Maybe when I finish my PhD, I'll go into teaching and use my summers for traveling and researching...hhmmm...

So I say I could be a *potential* participant.

As for being a host, hell yeah! You folks are welcome in my home and your bikes are welcome in my garage.
