Default Crane HI4 settings

Got the ignition out of drawer last night and read accompanying paperwork,
I am looking for input as to setting rev limits...and also wonder what would be considered optimum advance (on upper filpot).

I set mine at 6000 rpm limit, as close to half way between min[5000] and half range [7000]. I set my timing according to the instructions for using a back up timing light. Used 35 degrees and set pot at max advance. I have always used 93 octane and I get no detonation with it. With stock ign I had to use 93, I'm going to try mid grade soon, since I can take some advance out with the pot. Interested to see how you come out. Let us know your results please.

thought i'd jump in and get ur take on going with the Crane (or some other electronic ignition) vs. the points......I seem to burn through points (more often than I think I should)....also getting some backfire on my 74 XLH....this a points problem? or as u eluded to a FUEL/octane issue? I'm currently running 91 or 92 (whatever is the highest at my local pumps)....can't say that i've seen 93 around here (AZ)

thx!

Two things that cause backfire are exhaust leaks and lean carb settings. I would check for exhaust leaks first as this is easy, and you can never get a good tuneup with exh leaks.

Put 1/2 ounce of oil into each cyl thru the sparkie holes and run it at idle. You will get lots of smoke for about 5 minutes. Any not from the exhaust ends is a leak which must be fixed.

May as well check for intake leaks while you are at it. Spray WD40 around the cyl-intake-carb joints while idling. Any change in RPM is a leak which must be fixed.

Then richen up the pilot screw setting by 1/4 turn and see if there is a difference.

I have the Crane Hi-4.
