I had the same problem with the stock cap. A couple of weeks ago I bought an HD locking gas cap - a little pricy at $38 at the dealer but it appears to be well made, high quality, and the lock mechanism works well. Made in Germany. No rattles. Has the HD logo on the sliding metal cover that covers up the lock. Another reason for getting it is that I was getting a little worried about someone messing with my bike by dumping something in the tank, or, with prices the way the are, stealing gas. No picture but I'm sure they are availble to look at at your local dealer, or maybe online. Good luck.

I've been using the H-D lockable cap for about a year now. No rattles, no problems. I got it originally because I teach and park the bike at school everyday, and didn't want any of my practical-joking students to add a little something extra to my gas. Also less of a worry when I'm away from the bike in a store, restaurant, etc.

My after market cap looks just like your OEM. But it stays on when it is suppose to, and comes off when it's suppose to. I just asked my Indy for a gas cap, and that's what he gave me, might have been $10?

thanks Wolf and John. its probably a good idea for me to get a cap with a lock on it ive been kinda worried about somebody trying to put something in my tank. Theres alot of people in this small town that dont think i should own a harley wouldnt put it past them to do something stupid like that. i dont really care how it looks as long is its chrome and doesnt rattle constantly. thats for the fast response this site is great

I tried the locking cap a few years ago and it broke while it was locked on the bike. I took it back to the dealer and he said that happened all the time.

Glad you've had good luck with yours

Here's mine:

The gas cap just screws in (no tank mods needed) - got it at J&P Cycles (www.jpcycles.com). It's worked perfectly - no leaks, doesn't loosen while riding...
Their part #: 7200220 ($29.99)
