Default Looking for stock (black) battery side+topcover

Hi there.

I bought my used '92 XL in september 2006. It had a chrome battery side cover + topcover and a strap to hold the stuff in place.See the pic:

Quess what ? I lost the topcover the other day. I probably screwed up while fastening the strap earlier or the vibrations shook it loose.

Someone told me that the stock XL models way back (92-ish) were carrying black battery side+topcovers and a dito black strap.

Anyone got it lying around in the garage ? I could use it, and willing to spend a few $$ to help you get rid off it.

Any help appreciated.

Hiya,

I think the tops and straps were all chrome, at least on the '91-'93's that I have seen personally. As far as I know they didn't have any side covers stock. (My '91 didn't)

I do want to give you one suggestion regarding the battery mount. My '91 cracked an oil tank right at the rear mount for the battery tray. That was replaced under warranty. After that I took a 1 inch section of 5/8" heater hose and a section of 3/8 fuel hose stuffed inside the heater hose and wedged it between the top of the primary and the bottom of the battery tray. Haven't had another cracked oil tank since the last one 17 years ago. Cheap insurance.

My 2 cents,

Tom

Thx Tom, appreciate the info. Great DIY suggestion to prevent oil tank cracking up too.I just might go and do that.

Happen to have a picture of your '91-er ? Just curious.

Drive safe,

Erik.

The stock setup was a black top, stainless strap, and no side cover. The black battery with the HD logo was exposed. You will find black top covers, but I don't think HD ever produced black side covers, at least not for Sportsters.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

My 88 came with a black top cover and chrome side cover. Oddly enough I was looking through J&P cycles catalog last night, they have fairly inexpensive top covers

I believe the bikes only came with top covers. You had to buy the side covers.

You could be right, it's been a while. I haven't changed them out, and that's all I ever had.

I just found a couple of lids on ebay for like $15 or so. Covers look they're only $20 or so. Black covers are waaaaaay harder to find than chrome, but they're on ebay. Easy to find.

I also looked and couldn't find one. I had several things I sent to the powdercoater and the strap and cover were done at that time. Also had the electrical cover done too...
