05 to 06 transmission change
Does anyone know if a 05 XL tranny can be swapped out & a 06 put in? As everyone knows the new 2006 tranny has helical cut gears, not straight cut like those in the 05, so it shifts smoother & with less clunk.
Is this swap possible?
Thanks a bunch.

They changed the cases for the 06 models to accommodate the new tranny so I would doubt the 05 tranny would fit.

I think he wants to put the 06 helical gears on his 05 tranny, but I don't know if the gears are the same width and diameter just with the helical cut on the 06.
Have you thought of having NRHS doing a back cut job on your 05 tranny ?? You might ask them about it, I believe that would help with the shifting and possibly be cheaper.

I had an 04 and now have an 06. I noticed very little difference in the transmission and clutch. The clutch may (big MAY) be a little less stiff. The transmission still shifts plenty clunky too. Someone said there is a little loss in performance with the helical cut too but I forget why. If you got nothing else to do and have the coin then I guess it's worth doing. Otherwise I suggest you think long and hard about it and take an 06 out for a ride to feel if you think it's worth the trouble.

Totally different gear clusters and layout. Nothing retrofitable.
Coupled with different cases it think it would be an almost impossible task.

HUGE job!!
It would mean a total engine teardown as the cases have to be split to get to the tranny, unlike the rigid mount engines which had simple trapdoor access and the tranny could be removed in less than an hour without splitting cases.
His tranny will loosen up with use. Sporty trannies are usually more clunky when new.
Mine shifts smooth as and has done so since about the first cuppla thousand kms.

Intro
Wow thank you all for the enthusiasm, I had no idea there are so may XL advocates like myself. I am a new rider with a 2005 883 standard, so far in the 11 month since I've had the bike new, I have put in 5500 miles. In the process of paying the harley tax now. I guess I am not so lonely afterall.
Just read the 2007 info from HD.com. Fuel injection for ALL bikes!!
Still won't trade my bike away....
Maybe when they introduce a 6 speed.
Everyone check out aim-tamachi
they have this nifty 2004+ XL clutch upgrade. Learned about them at the long beach FastDates Bike show yesterday. Don't know what it does, exactly.
