Default Transmissions

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and like what I've seen so far. I have an 87 sporty 1100/1200 conversion that I customized and rebuilt 6 years ago. It is mostly stock inside, but I did add a belt drive, Thunderheader, hi flow air cleaner and jetted cv carb. I was pretty happy with the way it ran until this past weekend. I was at the York Factory Open House for the weekend when the transmission locked up. One gear is in several pieces and of course that caused more damage inside.

While I'd love to have a 5 speed conversion, I don't think one exists for this bike. Let me know if I'm wrong. I'd like to rebuild it with stronger gears. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm not sure yet how many parts will need replaced. I did find what appears to be a drop in unit from JP Cycles/V-Twinn, which would make the fix easier. It's $1,500. Is anyone familiar with these? Any help is greatly appreciated, as this is all new territory for me!!!

Thank you,

Bill

I should probably stay out of this one because most of my experience is with Iron head trannys. But I have bought tranny parts off e-bay and done OK. I assume you are doing this yourself so check your cases for cracks. Hey at least you could find all the parts. I've done much worse.

I am in the process of getting parts for my tranny to rebuild this winter. No 5 speed that I know of. I also considered the V-TWIN tranny but I believe thier shit is stamped out in china. I keep checking ebay get a andrews gear here and there. Just scored a new whole shifter pawl for $70. Make sure you switch out the trap door if you havnt already as you probably know that is a very weak spot on our years. And if you didnt the door might be the reason why it blew. Good luck If I come across any parts I let you know.

I had a tooth break off of second gear one time. I replaced second and third gear with andrews gears. Never had another problem with gears.

It is a good idea to replace the trap door. Zippers has a nice one with double row bearing.

The transmission in a evo 4 speed is very easy to work on.
