Default Headlamp clip... won't!

I've taken apart my headlamp to replace the bulb and can't seem to get the clip to reattach. Its a weirdly shaped clip that looks like a bent paperclip on steroids. The problem is that the manual shows the older style clip instead that is actually used on my bike (2006 xl1200c) I didnt' look closely when I removed it and now its looking more and more like a puzzle I can't solve and I HATE puzzles!

Has anyone else had this problem? I've stared at it for 2 hours now and tried every possible way but it is not coming to me.

thanks in advance,
