Virtual Ride From Hell
As I stated earlier in another thread I am not new to motorcycling, (50+ Yrs.) but just purchased my first Harley a couple of months ago. After reading just the first five pages of this forum I have begun to formulate a particularly scary scenario of what some future ride may hold in store for me.
It is a beautiful, cool, clear morning with the promise of high sixties or low seventies and a half way destination about a hundred miles away. The bike is warming up on the side stand as I don the old leathers and skid lid. Finally. The weekend is here and I am on the road! About twenty miles into the ride the engine stumbles badly trying to leave a traffic light. The next is the same thing. Crank Position Sensor? Good thing I have a spare thanks to the forum for the heads up on that! That did it! Runs so good now I decide to kick it in the ass and run it up to about a hundred or so. The engine is starving for fuel at that speed. Must be the vacuum petcock 'cause at full throttle there is very little vacuum. I roll to a stop and notice oil all over my left boot...WTF? The new Crank Position Sensor has melted! Good thing I brought another spare!
After repairs I'm off again with the oil tank replenished from the loss at the CPS. She's running pretty good now but at the next light I am getting smirks from some clown on a rice rocket sitting next to me. He's looking at my engine and pointing. Damn! Rocker boxes are leaking oil again!! Now I know I can't be having all this oil loss as the usage is pretty high already due to the bad valve seals and I don't dare put over three quarts of oil in the tank as it may blow up! So I decide to pull over and wipe up the mess and turn for home. I get all my gear back on and hit the starter button and.....CLACK!!!! Great! But I remember this forum and know to check the battery terminals which is very easy to do on my Sporty because.....the damn side cover has fallen off!!!! So I try the button again and it fires up just fine. I get back on the road and I'm thinkin' I had better just limp it home so I take it real easy all the way. I don't know how slow I was cruising 'cause the speedo was going nuts for a while and then just went to zero.
At last I'm on my street and I can see my driveway on the next block. One more stop sign to go......What the???? The belt breaks and unroles in the middle of the intersection! What insult. The push of shame for all the neighbors to wittness but push I do and finally I park the pig in the garage next to my forty one year old BSA which, BTW, is looking pretty good about now. If I could just make it sound as cool as the Sportster!!
Of course this is all in fun but entirely possible as all these problems HAVE happened to people on this forum. As of now my bike runs great and maybe by making fun of these problems the Harley gods will enjoy my humor and spare me any of these problems. Yeah, right!

The Harley Gods must like me.
Over 30,000 on my '04 and no probs other than a belt at 25,000.
And my stupid mistake of not switching back the petcock from reserve and ran out.

...and a 65' BSA runs like a top w/ no probs? OK... You haven't had any problems yet and you're already complaining? I think you'll fit in nicely here

Better keep reading. You didn't mention rejetting after new pipes and air cleaner just to miminize carb farts, weak shocks, weak forks, dim head light, butt bruising seat, high speed wobble, squiggley front tire, too tight drive belt yanking on the rubbermounted swing arm, barely enough electrical power, trouble shooting diagnostic codes Harley keeps secrete... and big twins hate you because you always out run them, and sport bikes hate you because you're always in the way.
Don't worry, it's all here, the good, bad, and ugly.
