Question Is this a decent deal on an 80 sporty?

What do you guys think about the deal on this '80 sporty from craigslist???

Quote:
For sale 1980 Harley Davidson Sportster 1000cc.This bike has been sitting for a few years under a tarp.Gonna need some work. Not in too bad of shape considering the circumstances.Need to sell immediately due to job loss. All offers considered. The motor is not seized up but is really gonna need a tune up.Here is your chance to own a hog at an affordable price and a little elbow grease. $1500

Cheers,

JMS

I would say if its in decent shape jump on it. $1500 isnt a bad price for something that (if its nearly roadworthy) wouldnt cost alot to get going. Might just need couple new tires , fluids changed, and carb cleaned.

$1500.00 is about the minimum you would pay for a basket case Sporty. For one that will probably run it is a steal.

I say, if this one runs, buy it. Otherwise forget it. It sounds too good to be true, but every once in a while you find some treasure out there.

I just sold my wrecked 76 Sporty (that i bought new) for $1500..Been sitting in my garage for 10 years now. The motor was completley rebuilt just before I wrecked it. Thats about the only thing thats any good on the bike anyway as the frame, wheels, and just about everything else is all bent up...

Your looking at tires for sure.Say even a top end some seals and gaskets,a good tune up so you put with your work it come to about 2,000 total. Now you have a good running bike thats safe and you can do it a little at a time over the winter.I think you found something.Put some gas into the carb or a shot of starting fluid.make sure you have spark a see if you can at least hear it try to start.pull the plugs and see for oil(top end) you may get away with just doing the heads. Now is the paint good, chrome if any pitted lights working, parts dented? If that is also the case save your money for $2500 arround x-mas you be suprised what you can pick up.With a ol lady nagging the kids need toys ect.and the bike you dont ride no more,a good time 1,000 off asking price and everything done for you.If this is your first ironhead you wont learn to much that way for your evo just needs plugs and oil.

with no tittle I would not want it free. I got a so called good buy on one a few years ago. the owner said tittle was misplaced and his wife was expecting she was about 8 1/2 months I talked to her .. He wanted 2000. ran good looked good . said I could get it and he would send in for a copy from the state. SO I buy it. several weeks no papers. SO go to state and get it inspected. YEP they kept it. Was on the stolen list from daytona. A couple of years before. Now he can no longer found. hard lesson . NEVER BUY A FRAME OR BIKE WITH OUT A TITTLE> AND if just a motor get a good bill of sale. Even from E bay. good luck. gar
