Default Made It My Own

How many threads are there where someone took a Sportster and "made it their own"? I don't know about you, but when I bought mine and received the title, that made it my own. I see this phrase as a nice way to tell someone that you don't particularly care for whatever mods they've done to their bike. Most of the "made it my own" examples I've seen pics of on this site look like a middle-schooler customized them. Bad hacksaw jobs, flat black paint sprayed on everything, mismatched accessories, low-function mods, and just general bad taste. All this work, and the poor old Sportster is worth half of what it was, if you could even find a buyer. Pissing away money is the owner's right, though....I guess.

Before anyone jumps on me for judging the asthetics of a bike, let me say I know there are various styles, and people have built good-looking bikes in all of them. Bad is bad, though.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

Jamez is a suckup! lol just kidding. I can understand your point. I'm pleased to say that I made my S2 "my own" the first day I saw it by having the title signed over to me. Then it was "really" my own when I rode it 1600 miles to get it home!

I do feel sorry for some of the real nice original condition or brand new bikes that get kind of slaughtered or customized into the ground.

But ownership does give a person the right to do it.

do you save all your money. or do you have other intrests that you wiseky invest in . such as golfing .fishing 4 wheel drive etc. most do it because they love it. i don't know many people who doesn't have something they enjoy spending money on. for most it's not an investment it's a pleasure. and others just don't get that at all. whatever you want to spend your money on is your buisnees. personally i don't want my bike to be one of a million replica bikes. and i enjoy the money i spend. i am fixing to sell mine now at a loss. but i have the enjoyment of makeing it mine. to each his own. and if you make a profit on yours and that's what it is about for you . i say more power to you.check out the bumper sticker if i have to explain you will never understand.

Here's mine so far. Got a lot of work to do, but I'm looking forward to it. Look at that beautiful thing...

Oh my god! What have I done!? NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! It's hideous. Why god? Why? Why did I choose to make my bike look different and unique so it stands out among all other motorcycles as a representation of who I am and what kind of person that lives within?

I feel like an idiot...

Like I said, I can appreciate a good build, no matter what the style. I'm not dissing the guys who know what they're doing and have an eye for continuity. Very few people ride stockers, me included. I'm talking about bikes like this one, which the owner "made his own".

Here's my Sportster, since someone asked, and a couple of my 350, and a bicycle I built, since that seems to be fair game, too.

I agree that keeping an bike unmolested is the best way to preserve its value! but I'd guess it depends on what your about to use the thing for. I see a lot of bikes that are strictly T - T (tavern to tavern) bobbers, so that's its purpose.... Cafe is of course the high class way of doing that, to my mind.

I like mine, it's a daily rider and useful all around scoot kept looking like it's just off the showroom floor despite its mileage, as a daily driver its refined for what I use it for, love it, form and function and no balony, must be a Sportster!!
