I agree somewhat with some of what you have to say. But if you bought a Sportster wanting to keep it pristine so you can get the maximum resale-value from it, was it what you really wanted when you bought it?

I think it is an attitude that Harley clevery has fostered to sell more (parts in this case, freakin' "chrome consultant" OMG I never thought I'd see the day), like the girl's bike thing... smart on their part. We're suckers when we listen.

Most of the "made it my own" examples I've seen pics of on this site look like a middle-schooler customized them. Bad hacksaw jobs, flat black paint sprayed on everything, mismatched accessories, low-function mods, and just general bad taste. All this work, and the poor old Sportster is worth half of what it was, if you could even find a buyer. Pissing away money is the owner's right, though....I guess.
Before anyone jumps on me for judging the asthetics of a bike, let me say I know there are various styles, and people have built good-looking bikes in all of them. Bad is bad, though.

IT's only pissing away money if you intend to sell it. And adding on a bunch of chrome doo dads is the same pissing away..
Gee, my bike started life as an 883 , now it's a 1208 with Screamin Eagle Heads.. after several years of ownership, I've finally decided on a direction to "Make it my own" and I Doubt I'll find anyone else with a SIMILIAR looking bike. At least Until I start posting pictures of it. And When I'm done, I'll probably invest upwards of 15,000 into a bike I paid 4800 for.. Gee, thats like 2 ironheads and a Dyna Superglide, added to the price to make it my own..
But then I plan on handing this bike down to my son, and he's only 7 so I got some time to PLAY with it.

Nope - I think a well-customised bike has good or better value than a stocker. I've done quite a bit to mine, but with an eye toward keeping it looking "right". Sawed-off fenders, bad-fitting tanks, seats that don't fit, ruining nice paint jobs, etc. don't do anyone any good, and I'll bet the owners that do this stuff to their bikes end up regretting it later.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

I've often wondered this too.
I mean, Oh my God!, how can anyone take a perfectly good brand new fender/paint job and chop/paint it with BBQ paint?
I for one don't have the balls. I'd rather keep the stockers and spend some extra coin on a used or aftermarket set to customize. At least that way, if you don't like it or have to sell it, you can always put it back to stock.

The diversity is good or all our bikes here would look the same. But even that can have limits I hate to see a newer bike choped up and sprayed flat black. But even then if it was what the guy really wanted and he is happy I won't judge but I don't have to like it.

The reason you see so much of it, it's because it's the IN Thing right now. A couple of years ago it was long forks. Now it's bobbers and hack jobs.
Lets just hope that the next fad isn't Rick Fairless style paintjobs. Cuz Then I might have to start pounding heads.

Yeah for real I don't think anybody could afford a paint job like that, that is enough paint to cover a 3k sq ft home!
I upgraded my motor last year and I am not sorry I did. I love it. this year I am changing the color and customizing it and "Making it my Own" just because I can. Granted there is enough Flat black spray paint on this site to paint the whole state of Texas(not enough for Alaska though, hee-hee). I am painting my own with cans, Oxford blue satin. I like it and that is "ALL" that matters to me, I know there is a butt load of bad hack jobs on this site(and others) but so what. you gotta start some where. what I don't get is why they do it to brand new bikes, that is kinda wierd, but oh well to each his own. good thing about paint jobs is, if you don't like you can always paint it some other color.
