Exhaust wrapping?'s

Hey guys imma wrap the pipes soon and never done it. So what do i need to hold it on ,( zip tyes metal wire)and should I soak the wrap before( how long and in what) and does it matter how much of the pipes I wrap?

Stainless hose clamps work best for holding the ends down. Some auto parts stores sell stainless zip ties specifically for this, I've tried them before and can't figure out how they're supposed to work.

It's a lot easier to get a tight wrap if you soak it first. Just get it wet, toss the piece that you're going to use into a bucket of water for a couple seconds before you wrap. Don't throw the whole roll in, just what your going to use. You might want to do a test wrap first to figure out how long of a piece to cut from the roll.

It doesn't matter at all how much of the pipes you wrap. I've seen guys wrap from the cylinder head all the way out to the tip of the muffler, and I've sen guys just wrap an 8" section in the middle where they needed a heat sheild for their leg.

I soaked the wrap in water, still have some soaking a month later. I used hose clamps to hold, I would imagine you could wrap all of part of the pipe. I have seen both ways. I found if I use the roll to wrap I could get a tighter wrap than in pieces and this was a funky 2-stroke pipe for an ATV. I would imagine as Gazza said pieces would work good for straighter pipes.

The only other thing I can tell you is that you will probably wrap and re-wrap and find out what works best for you.

Bought way more than I needed and have been too lazy to take it out of the cheap cooler I soaked it in. My buddy has an 83 FXR that we made custom pipes for. As soon as he is ready he can have the left overs.

Definately use stainless hose clamps. I used the spendy $18 set of clamps from the auto parts store that are made for this, and I didn't even make it to work before the wrap was unraveling and flapping in the wind. Went to Ace Hardware the next day, got the hose clamps and haven't had any problems since! Oh yeah, I just wrapped mine dry, and it turned out great. You'll definately want to use some type of rubber or leather gloves while doing this, or you'll feel like you've been handling raw fiberglass insulation afterwards.
