Normal oil temp??
I spent today riding my new 2003 sporty. I noticed the oil tank was really hot and the temp gauge said 200 degrees. Is this normal?
Also, the engine backires throught he carb sometimes and the throttle response from idle is really bad. When you get on the gas from idle it just bogs. Any ideas??

That is about the temp my bike runs at on long rides in 50 to 60 degree temps.

Depending on how hot it is outside, it is quite normal. If it does not get to at least 180, the mosture in the oil will not boil out.

Well Cameron, I will ASSUME that you bike is all stock. The Jets in the Carb are set very lean for emissions, and can cause a back fire or bogg, so can leaking Intake seals.
without being able to see the bike it is quite hard to give a diagnoses, check the intaka seals, if that is not it, take it over to the dealer.

Thanks for the help. I thought it may have been jetting i'll have to check it although i'm at 6000' so if it's lean from factory it should get better with altitude. I'll look for that thread from Stevo.
Jeffy,
One thing I like about harleys is that you can do the work yourself. I'm not a dealer man. Too much fun to be had wrenchin.

I just read the Stevo rejetting bible. On Ya Stevo!!!!
I've got a dyno so i'll do some testing.
Stevo, 12.7 AFR max power??? Are these engines alot different to cages in that respect. I always find around 13.1 is max power on those four wheeled thingys.
BTW. I'm definately not doubting you. Just want to learn.
Cheers

DPT living in mexico you might want to add a oil cooler, a good one will drop your temp. 20 degrees. I live down on the coast of texas and the summers get pretty hot here! Also when you get your bike broken-in you could run synthetic oil that too would lower your temp. as much as 20 degrees too!
