Default Nice Ride On the '78 Today (pics)

Took the old '78 out for a good run today up into the mountains. With the freer-flowing exhaust the engine is a real ripper, especially when the cams hit around 4k: Hold on baby!! Overall, the bike runs super strong everywhere and the dual plugged heads with single fire ignition have really smoothed out the light-throttle running. No more surging or bucking, just smooth power. Only problem is my King tank goes on reserve after using about 2.1 gallons (around 105 miles) so I'm not sure how much is really left. Can't top off the tank fully due to the geometry involved so I think I'll use a graduated bucket and drain a full tank to see exactly how much fuel is in there. I want to take the old girl over the Cascades soon but there's a 100 mile stretch with no gas stations. I just bought a pair of new 1.5 liter camping gas bottles that I can fit in my saddlebags so I won't run out of gas regardless, but it'd be nice to know just how much gas fits in these old King tanks.

Another lovely ride in the PNW.

Eric

I set my Roadster tank petcock to ON and drained it with the bike level. Then turned it to RES and drained again - had almost exactly 1 liter. Put that back in, rode around the corner to the gas station, filled it - took 11 liters. So i have 11 + 1 liters.

I get less than 20 KMs per liter - usually about 18. So i get about 200 KMs per tankfull. If i am easier on the throttle.

Actually it was not that simple. The first time i mistakenly did it wrong and ran out of gas a block from my house. Then i did it wrong again. Finally got it right.

It's tough sometimes being an undiagnosed hyperactive kid grown up, trying to get things done, and not being focused. Made it this far; somehow. Hope to get another coupla decades out of it.

She looks good.
Do those twin front discs work better than the 77's single disc?

Nice pics, and a nice bike. I had been thinking about building a 2-1 pipe for my Ironhead (I have a set of the old Sportster stock 2-1 headers), but after reading your other thread, I'm not sure it would be worth the trouble. I'm thinking the stock headers with slip-ons (what I'm running now) may be better for performance than a 2-1 built from parts.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

Actually, No! They work OK but the big single disc on my '77 seems to pull down better than the duals.
