how tachy
i just got my 75 xlh on the road and tachis not working and i think the cable is good. is it common for the drive gear to break or malfuntion can it be repaired or would it need to be replaced. my harley service manual is missing info on this topic. any direction would be great.

If it`s like mine the tach drive just unscrews, you should be able to remove the cable and look to see if it spins with the motor running.
Yes: cable or tach bad
No : tach drive issue

Undo cable at both ends. Remove cable from sheath noting which end is top/bottom. Spray any solvent thru sheath. Clean cable with any solvent then grease it. Put it back together, re-install.
Somewhere in this process you will discover if the cable is good or bad. Do all this even if the cable tests good as in the previous post.

Thanks for the direction i discovered that it is the tach is broken the cable and drive is good, which is better an electronic or mechanical tach? Are there any features i should look for with the new one.

I replaced my original 1980 mechanical tach with an NOS 1981 electrical version from eBay. Looks the same but no cable. Really nice to have that cable gone.

I see the older tach at a good price on ebay quite often. I'd keep it stock.
