Default speedometer suddenly off

I went for a quick ride today, and noticed the my speedometer seems to be off. I think about 10 mph. Before cruising around 50ish the tach would be around 2500 rpm, now 55 is 3000 rpm. 45 is about 2500 rpms. (all in 5th gear)
What could cause this?
Does anyone know off hand what rpm they run in 5th at 50?

I have been riding in the rain a lot more (been raining almost 28 out of the last 30 days), but that shouldnt matter. However I did notice a little condesation under the speedo lense. That has happened before and it just went away.

Thanks
Rebil

The speedo needs to go through a test cycle before you start the bike.

This sounds like you quickly started the bike before the test cycle was complete.

Let it run through it's test before you start, and you shouldn't have any problem.

Hey thanks, its worth a shot, I will try it. Cant imagine that this was the first time that Ive done that but I will see. I actually thought about shutting it off for a min while I was out on the road.

Thanks again

I don't know if there is a difference in gearing between my '09 1200 and your bike but if memory serves me correctly in 5th gear 50 mph is in the 2300-2350 rpm range and 65 mph is around 3000 to 3050 rpm. I hoped that helped a little.

Might be the speed sensor getting ready to go- or its caked full of metal shavings and that's throwing it off. Its an easy item to check- located on top of the transmission, next to the starter. Its visible from the right-hand side of the bike. The sensor looks like a black "cap", kind of oval in shape, about 1"x 1/2". Its held on by a single allen bolt and has a wire coming out of it.

Good Luck.

Every now and then (not often) my speedo tops out around 35 no matter how fast I go.

I just shut it off and restart and it's fine.

I went out and turned the key on and waited a few secs then started. Went for a quick ride and it seemed fine now. Seemed like the speedo cycle thing that toe mentioned.
Thanks for all the responses guys.
