I have a similar problem with my 75'. Whenever I get up to highway speed and roll the throttle it starts to sputter. Its got the original carb on it and I'm thinking this might be the problem. The damn thing runs rich as hell no matter how you adjust it.

As far as I know, it shouldn't be doing that with the stock carb. You should try to mess around with the mixture screws and see if you can't fix that. If it's sputtering when you "roll the throttle" then I doubt it's running too rich. I would think it's the opposite; you're starving the engine of fuel. And if you are convinced that your mixture (idle and under load) is too rich then you should probably look to lack of fuel in the bowl.

Just my $0.02

I would, as already suggested, look first at the float level. For the stock carb it should be 16 or 17 mms, exactly, measured pictured in the factory manual. You may find it to be 14 or 15.

Gratefulmelon, are you running straight drag pipes ? The inside of my exhaust always looked like the carb was running rich. I went thru that with mine. I ran the bendix carb and messed with it for a long time. Bike ran great, no sputtering, but pipes always looked black and sooty no matter what I did to the carb.
Changed pipes and it seemed to solve the problem.

Yeah I'm running straight drag pipes. I've tried adjusting the mixture and also rebuilt the carb...no luck.
