Starter specs. Does size matter?
Thinking about upgrading my starter to a shiny new Terry. Been highly recommended by a couple of my friends. But which one is right for me? They come in 1.2, 1.4 and 2.0kW versions. The 1.2 kw is supposed to be a stock replacement, but why wouldn't i go with the 1.4kW since it's the same price? Is there a disadvantage? More strain on the battery? Harder on the motor?
Your advice is appreciated. Anyone had experience with these starters? Thanks, everyone.

Curious if the old starter was bad or are you just swapping to be swapping?
I'd think the higher rated starters are for needed torque in modified engines.
Call the tech guys at www.jpcycles.com
They can help you out.

As long as the fit is the same why wouldnt you want to go with a stronger starter? I would beef up the pos and neg cables, but thats a good idea anyway.

That's what i thought
Exactly. Plus, the 1.2 kW and 1.4 kW models are exactly the same price. Is there a downside i don't know about? Maybe someone here knows...
Oh, and my starter is occasionally doing the dreaded "clunk" and it's getting worse. Wanna get parts together before is get stuck with the bike down for weeks.

The 1.4 kw starter will have a bit more torque than the 1.2 kw.
This will spin the engine over easier, not faster.
The 2 kw has more torque for hi comp engines, you would only require this starter if you had done a lot of work on the engine[UP TO STAGE 3]
The 1.4 kw would not load the cables or the battery any more than the 1.2 kw would.
At work we have mazda LPG fork lifts with two starters.
A low power and a high power
If we fit a low power it lasts no more that 6 months,
the high power one lasts at least 12 months?
But we fit what ever the customer wants?
I would go for the 1.4 kw motor

FYI, the starter in my toyota truck (22RE 2.4l) is 1.0kw and is of the same type as the sportster starters.
The heavy duty version is 1.4kw
FYI2, still have original starter after 23+ years, only needed to change solenoid contacts. (relubed it when I had it apart)

the draw on the battery should be considered since our sporty's have a minimal charging system and a small battery
