Xb 3rd Gear "jumping"
Hi Lads,
I have a problem with my tranny that I haven't been able to find an answer to on my regular Buell Forum - Buells Downunder - in Australia.
Seems like it might not be such a common problem. Bike has just over 25,000miles.
I originally thought I had an intermittent slip in the clutch, but after replacing with a Barnett the problem is still there.
Symptoms:
1. Momentary increase in revs & a physical surge.
2. Only happens in 3rd gear (It has now deteriorated enough after doing the clutch that I can get it to "jump" at will).
3. Only happens after using engine braking & then accelerating.
My guess is that it is the drive dogs on the gears are worn or the selector fork bent.
Any other ideas? Not looking forward to splitting the cases.
Regards,
FOB (Fool Ona Buell)

most likely it's the 3rd gear countershaft. It's a typically common enough problem.. Mostly on sportster's it's 1st and 3rd, but I've heard just 3rd going out..
Unfortunatly you're going to have to dive into the transmission to find out whats the problem..

Sorry for the delay in reporting back...the problem ended up being the shifter forks wearing. I replaced all the associated gears though, just to be safe.
