Air filter ideas
While I'm waiting for my led sled rigid frame kit to come I thought I would start figuring out what I'm goin to do with a few things on the bike,I got to lookin at the air cleaner right now it is a SE with chrome ham can cover .I would like to use the filter and mounting plate but want to change the outer cover so the filter will be open.(not worried about rain ran open before and never had a problem) A buddy of mine has cnc equipment and can do anything I need so looking for some ideals and pics of self made covers any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it's a good sturdy K&N filter you could just cut an inch or so off the back of the cover leaving that 1" of filter exposed. Or you could cut slots in the front and rear of the cover to allow more air flow.

One of my thoughts was to have my buddy make a aluminum or steel plate that was the same shape as the filter itself and use the 2 screws that hold the outer cover to the filter to hold the plate .

I was running my SE A/C like this for awhile.
Drop the cover and make a plate that stops at the filter then bolt the logo on.

Thats what I was thinkin ,how did that work for you .I did the same thing on a fxdwg I had and used an HD filter cover insert for the outter cover which left the filter open .What did you make the outter cover out of metal or aluminum?

Worked good, used one of the wife's old baking pan's as a template, she's still wondering where it went too
I also used some small tubing pushed into the breather bolt holes and a tee fitting then drilled a small hole in the back plate to run it through to the ground to keep blowby oil from getting on the filter.

It all depends if you are driven by bling or function. The big issue with most of the filter designs in the Harley world is high intake air temps. The air flow over the motor pre-heats the air for you, killing HP and promoting detonation.

Regarding engine mods, it all depends what you are driven by......
Bling, bragging rights, silky smooth power delivery, a little more peak power, violent power delivery,
traction or wheelie limited acceleration, a sound that just drips testosterone or peace of mind that
everything is as perfect as you know how to make it.
When the racers get done doing the impossible the engineers get a chance to correct the errors in the model.

I know you've had good experience with your tube style aircleaner versus stock, but did you ever take any heat measurements with a ham can style cover that didn't force all of the air directly from the engine in? The stock cover directs air directly from the engine, but a cut cover allows air in from other directions, particularly when moving. It might not be as efficient with heat reduction as the $500 tube, but if its a free mod and it goes in the right direction, I wouldn't call it bling.

Here it is.
