Axle nut cotter pins
What do people use to keep the axle nuts from backing off or coming loose?

I have a large clevis(not positive on the name) pin in mine. It has been there for years. Looks like one of these babies.

That's all I use.
If you want you could switch to a standard nut (grade 5 or better) and use a thread locking compound.
Or you could use a torque prevailing nut.

My rear axle doesn't have a hole for a pin. I use large nylock nuts on my axles and have never had a problem.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

Go down to the hardware store and score some STAINLESS...
...cotter pins.
Put a spare in your tool bag.
They're generally better than anything you'll find from the Catalog Mafia (J&P, V-Twin, Custom Chrome, etc.) and worlds cheaper.
That nut may get loose and try to back out, but it's not going to go ANYWHERE!

Anybody ever see an axle nut come loose?
I certainly have not.
