alternator from genny conversion kit
Im still considering the alternator conversion kit because of the genny chatter. Who has the best price around? Im in Ontario Canada so I have to take that into account. I dont see any used anywhere even on ebay so i guess im looking at big bucks, but none the less i think I may go for it if I can find the cheapest around.

I have seen them on the 'Bay for $200-250.. but not very often. I haven't heard good or bad about them except that they are spendy.. I went with a Cycle Elctric Generator and it is killer.. I take it the one you want is the one that lists for $420 and comes in black or chrome?
Here is what I would love to see for Sportsters.. what Alton has done is created a real Alternator for bikes.. this really charges the battery better and lets you run modern lighting. The first time I saw this was just a few yrs ago and made for Vincents.. the ones that fit on the end of the Generator just don't seem to be like the Alton which cost mucho bucks..

A Cycle Electric generator is the way to go. I've got one on...
...my '74 and it's NEVER even hiccuped once.
I run a 100w halogen headlight, bullet running lights, tail/brake, and gauge lights with ZERO issues.

try Ray Dugauy in New Brunswick <saddlebagrail@yahoo.ca>, He converts car alternators to work in ironheads. I got one from him last year. Has regulator built in. looks like:
Havn't run mine yet as still building engine. He stands behind them though, says he and all his buddies run them. and no problem in rain.

My local indie here has them in a standard catalog - as i recall the price is around $400, maybe less - i can check if you want. Any local shops down your way with the usual catalog suppliers?

My IH had an alternator conversion when I bought it, but it wouldn't charge the battery. Turns out, the cheap foreign made regulator was the problem. The alternator itself was still good. If you go with the alternator conversion, you may want to consider an American made regulator. They cost twice as much to start with, but only if the foreign made one does cr*p out on you.

sorry to resurrect a (fairly) dead post, but mick, i'd certainly appreciate that info if you wouldn't mind. i havent checked shops in my area since i plan on doing the work myself (plus i've just moved here and am waiting on my bike). i found this one which seems pretty reasonable, as far as these things go:
http://www.debrix.com/Generator-Alte...32-7528-vt.htm
also @85mm, would the brand new regulator i put on when i thought i had a good genny work or are they different? i'm assuming they're different. also, when you talk about weak unsatisfactory foreign vs robust verile american regulators, where should i start looking for one of those?

I found J&P will identify American made components. You don't have to buy from them, just use them to separate cheap stuff from American. By the way, American made stuff can be defective too. But I think you have a better chance buying American and you have a better chance of getting it replaced if it is defective. Life is a crapshoot.
