Think of it this way- when you squeeze the lever you're opening up the gap between the lever and the housing thus allowing the plunger that keeps the light off to come out and actuate the light. Therefore if you remove the lever altogether you make the gap infinitely large, so the plunger, which keeps the light off, is always out.

I superglued a thin piece of plastic onto mine when I broke the little nub off of mine.
