back to the future
I admire what the sportster start life as, a do it all motorcycle. Off-road or on road it was the real deal bike. What would it have been like if HD would have stayed with the program it started in the 50's. Today we have the all terrain bikes and have come to know them as adventure bikes. The suv of motorcyledom. Some of those bikes are no more than a street bike dressed up to look the part. No more off-road oriented than a crv honda. Then you have others that mean business, like the KTM SE and the HP2 BMW. The rest of the bikes fall in the middle some where just trying to carve out a niche. What would of happened if the orginal adv bike had kept that focus. I dare to say it would be on top today having a top competing adventure bike. just look at the advertisement form 1958
So the plan is to build wht might have been if HD had stayed with the program a modern XLCH. The formula is to start with a xl1200s and keep the main frame with engine and toss the rest in favor of MX based hardware. While the swingarm is a issue with stock shock layout, it will be fixed with a custom mono shock arm. this will address the travel and swingarm angle issues. the suspension goals are to have 9" travel in the back and 10" up front with a bike that handles well on and off-road. With enough stability to cross several state lines in a day. follow along as I try to fulfill build a Harley adventure bike
In the beginning there was a motorcycle
This motorcycle had to be stripped of all its old clothes so fresh clothing could be put on. It could have a new life of purpose and meaning
Parts are ordered and pen has been put to paper for the development of a modern XLCH

I dig what your saying, And agree. But then the Sporty has sorta evolved into its own little world. Partly to make way for the Mirage of big bikes HD started making. I don't think there is anything capable of so many different styles and setups as these bikes.
Thanks for the Post,, Good Points al around !!

thanks guys, here is a mock up shot with the forks
Monday I am leaving for Nicaragua will be gone for a week. When I get back the steering stem should be done, wheels in and the exhaust should be here. Also by that time the swing arm should be at the fab shop to get moddified.
