are you talkin' about Big Andy or yours? Sounds like the orignal poster just had a valve job done. Competition work is a whole different thing

Well it looks like Im returning these heads to have the valve pretrusion set properly .Just ticks me right off when you pay top dollar and the job is not right .No way in hell im going to put the heads on if they are under the correct spec.I wish i lived in the us as trying to get work done on old harleys in oz is pure hell.Still dont know how the hell the machinist got it wrong .He has been doing it for thirty years. Well just about to call him had to wait until my temper calmed down.Im just glad I checked them and not just put them on god knows what would happened .

i just got a set of heads at my local machine shop done for a friend in switzerland and then im gonna send them to him. new guides, new hardend seats, new valves, and bead blastin heads to get all rust and paint off of them, and fully assembled and returned to me with everything in spec per FSM for a wopping $300.00 (i supplied all the parts) $750.00 just seems outragious.

Thats what I reckon 750 for the work i nearly fell over but that was the only guy i can find that will do them.Trust me I looked for two weeks .Where i had them done was a 8 hour drive down and back.I found one hd shop that said they can do them but will not do them if i supplied the parts.But for them to do them with parts .around 1500.Thats why I kept looking .So i rang the shop today and he said bring them back and he will remeasure them and fix the problem .If he has made a mistake.at no cost well im not payin more thats for sure.Havent told the wife yet we have to go back again .That going to be fun.

Yes, machine shop charges are steep in Oz. I think from memory I paid about $700 to bore and hone two cylinders, fit two two exhaust valve seat inserts and recut the intake seats and reface the intake valves. That was at the local automotive machine shop. He offered me a job as a machinist while I was there, paying $28 an hour so that sure as hell is not where the money goes.

Not wrong hopper they know how to charge.I lost count of how many machine shops I tried but they all said the same thing they cant get there cutting gear in the heads.

That sounds weird. Makes no sense to me at all. Cutters come down from the combustion chamber side, usually following a guide spindle that sits in the valve guide. There are only two automotive machine shops in Cairns, Repco and an independent, and both do bike work without problems.

minimum valve sticking out the head when measured from the shoulder of the guide is 1.375 ive got 1.345..................
he said bring them back and he will remeasure them and fix the problem .If he has made a mistake

All he'll have to do is grind/cut the seat a little deeper.

Something to consider and check though is the length of the new valves vs. stock valves. Are they the same length from the valve face to stem tip?

here is a tool I made to check clearences on rocker arms in relationship to underside of rocker to top of spring with big cams but can be used for any.....




Then wioth that I do the ribithog "clay" piston.

Thats a clever tip tracbike .Takes all the guessing out of the mix
