to much money, to start from scratch,...I have a 4-5/8 sitting on the shelf. and a 93 sim to yours, both sitting since the refresh. They will evenually find there way back into service. But after many motors and rebuilds I just got worn out. Part of it is when I quit racing Harley. Don't get me wrong loved it / love them. But the money side just took the thrill out.

I took a lot of heat from the guys for going inline but now even my Pro bike is obsolete. Factory bikes like new ZX14 R can be driven to track and run low 9 and break 8 sec.
And the fact I love racing so much puts the bank book in a different perspective than before. I even am concidering bying one of them off the floor a few tweeks and ride and run it.
No trailer, no tools, no gas for truck, generators, and bike (race gas is around 16.00 a gal.) You go to the track now super street bikes running low 7's close to pro stock numbers in the early 90's.
I guess as far as racing you would not want to go with iron......but street fun hell ya!!!!! so make a master plan and follow. A real fun motor is big bore and 4-1/2 stroke. for street.

Sounds like you guys have been down this road. I'm just lookin' to have a little fun, but want to do it right. I know I'm building a relic, but I'm ok with that...
Interesting info about the tranny/clutch.

As far as the trans is concerned I would switch from left side shift to right side shift (big difference). You will have to use a different main shaft for the older dry clutch setup (hollow mainshaft for the pushrods). Plus you will need to use the older magneto cam cover or weld a tab on the bottom of a nose cone cover to hold the clutch cable in place.

I gotta tell you that in the six years that I have been on this forum I can't recall anyone ever building a big bore ironhead like my 93". So I even wonder if there is anyone out there who is willing or even remembers how to build one.
Older cam covers will fit the 79 case?

no discouragement just want to plant the seed.....you have to have a plan, do you want to go racing? (in to days environment you will have a cool nostalgia drag bike like the one above) a nitro high gear, Do you want a kick ass red light to red light Harley that goes short distance that will impress your friends. But one of them probably has a 120+ bagger that will cream you and is ridable on hyway.
These are just reality questions. So I will take info i got
He has cases.....they probably are not with paper work so they may never see the street.
At the track whole different story, you just can not compete even in a all harley enviroment with consistency.
Yesterday I was looking at results from Indy, street bikes with no wheelie bar running low 7 @ 190 mph That is sick.
It all come down to clear logic WHAT DO I WANT TO DO? look beyond tomorrow.
There is one street bike that is perfect in the world of big ironheads and FNDY owns it.
ask him..... what it takes to get a bike near that quality and ridable on the street.

No matter how you approach it. the ones telling you it will cost tell you from experience. The one supporting the project are spending your money.....

I'm also not trying to discourage anyone here but just trying to put things in perspective. Like I said in my previous post I haven't seen anyone build a big inch iron in the six years that I'm here. On the other hand NHRS sells a shit load of conversion kits. If you notice the only guys talking about hot rod ironheads here are us old guys (the over 50 crowd). It's what we know, it's what we grew up with. The young guys talk about it for just a short while and then they see the sawzall on the bench and forget all about hot rodding the engine. I mentioned Monte03 because I think what he's doing is the most reasonable hot rod project and probably the most fun.
As I've said before riding a big inch iron stroker around town is not really enjoyable because you can only last about 30 minutes in the saddle and you are still vibrating two hours later. Plus, you're always worried about something blowing up and then there is the oil leak that always seems to spring up in a new location. Yes it's a blast to ride but you definitely put in more time fixing then the 30 minute ride. I guess my age is showing through now.
I guess if you are just going to race it WTF go for it, but I do agree with tracbike in that you should have a plan.

Actually it sounds like he has a plan, scrounge up some old used speed equipment, see what he can build with it, and go have a blast.

Why is that not a plan? It's not what you would do,or I would do, but it sounds like a plan to me.

And just because you don't see stuff on here does not mean it's not happening . Including the double engine shovelhead ,i have 5 big inch motors to build in my shop right now. And like you say, all the owners are over 50 but the up side of that is that they can afford their toys and they're old enough to know they're not going to get rich or famous doing this stuff.
