New Guy Here... (mod to front drum brake to beef it up?)
Hi everyone. I'm a longtime rider (25+ years) but just recently bought my first HD (a 72 XLCH/photos to follow). I'm loving it EXCEPT that front drum brake is damned scary! I thought the right-side shift was going to be an issue, but I figured that out pretty quickly. So, here is my question:
Is there any mod I can do to that front drum to beef it up? Or do I just have to suck it up and plan my stops a half mile in advance?
Thanks in advance for your expert opinion. Seems like a great bunch of people here.

Welcome from SW Mississippi. Uh, you can do what I used to do with my old 69 FLH back when I got it in 1976. It had front drum brakes: I'd start slowing down way ahead of time and dragging my feet. That helped, until I rebuilt the entire bike in the late eighties and put a disk brake set up on the front.  |

Welcome to the world of Sportsters and the XL Forum.
Since this aint your first rodeo, I assume you aren't running out of lever travel. If you are then you may just need to tighten the cable adjustor. After that, open up the drum and see what's worn. Worn pads, actuator cams or cam slot on the shoes can all reduce brake effectiveness.
With my Triumph conical drums, we could attach rebuild clips to the actuator cams [or was it the cam slot on the brake shoe where it contacts the cam?] to make up for excess wear.
