Could the slow jet just be dirty? Basically trying to decide if I should:

a) order a jet, wait for it to arrive, then disassemble the carb

or

b) disassemble the carb, clean it and see how things look

Takes maybe 30 minutes to disassemble, clean, and reassemble.

+1

Do [b]

But spend more time, maybe a couple of hours. See the carb cleaning Sticky for how to make a simple carb stand. Makes the whole process better and more accurate.

Ok...

Got the carb cleaned. The slow jet was most definitely gunked. Everything is reassembled. But I've got one question:

When I pulled the carb from the manifold it had an o-ring AND a gasket. The FM only shows an o-ring. The gasket looks like crap, so if I don't neeed it everything is going back together without it.

What say the great IH minds?

My '78 had both when i got it 3 years ago. I asked on this forum, then discarded the gasket. Since then the special-shape o-ring broke so i am using just the gasket.

So i put everything back together, but it's still stalling around the 20% - 40% throttle area. By running it richer and richer I can shrink the dead zone, but it's there all the time. With pilot about 2 turns out it's ridable, but still has a dead spot, all though it's small enough to work around. But I'm definitely super rich. Fouling the front plug and BURNING through gas. Maybe getting 15MPG.

Took the carb back out and made sure to clean (as best i could) the slow and bypass circuit of the carb.

No change.

Thoughts?

No offense but check basics: oil level? clogged air filter? fresh gas? air leaks?

There is no point in messing with the pilot screw setting. Set it according to the Sticky and leave it there.

If you are at greater than 1 turn out on the pilot screw you can go to a larger slow jet, which may solve the problem.

Review please: what carb? what main jet? what slow jet? how many turns out on the pilot screw?
