Hot and rich, carbon build up leading to dieseling.

It's called dieseling. The motor gets hot and there's just enough fuel in the cylinders to ignite. Could be poor gas, excess carbon build up, toofast idle...several different things. You might want to let it idle down a few seconds before you shut down?

My stock 75 XLCH did the same thing today and a couple other times. I have a bendix carb 1 5/8 out on the adjustable main stock air cleaner 1 3/4 drag pipes. I was thinking I needed to adjust my valves. I'm also getting towards the end of my break in on a new top end. Which bike was it? The 78 or the 72?

Timing is a possibility to add to the above mentions.

mine does it on occasion too, but mine's really unpredictable. i'll second carbon build up and timing. other folks agreed with that diagnosis when it happened to me too...

i think it was just shitty gas. just put new points in it and timed with a light. after reading the above post i was almost empty anyway, so i went and filled up with some 91 and added a little octane boost and now its not doing it.

but im sure there is a lot of carbon build up in there. 40 years worth to be exact. top end is due i think. burns oil, smokes a bit.

i just went into panic mode cause im leaving to sturgis right now. good to go now, its getting rode.

thanks for the responses.

Mine's done that a couple times, hasn't in a long time, but I just figured it's hot and it was turned off at the right time to fire.

Hold the throttle open after turning off the switch. The extra air flow blows out the fire and it stops dieseling.
