Not in Kansas...I am lucky to find an 883 for under $4000, 1200s are $5000+

883 now, enjoy it, if you decide you need more power later do the conversion yourself. It'll save you money, and you'll have a new bike when you do the conversion!

Mine was fine with me and the wife on it on fairly long trips as an 883 and the only reason that I converted to 1200 was because I got a hell of a deal on a Buell top end. I've got most of the parts to convert to 1250 with efi heads and swap my 497 cams for 575's and I'm not doing that because it was lacking power as a 1200, I just can't stop myself now !

My 883 does the ton with no complaints and pulls hard the whole way there; I weigh 180ish. When I've got the wife on the back and I'm running uphill, I sometimes wish it had a little 'more' but it's not bad enough to make it a high priority.

Thank you so much guys. I now know what to look for and not to look down on the lowly 883s, and I know that if I drop about $500, I can get the 1200 conversion and do it myself next winter, winter 2013-2014.

im happy with my 883. biggest complaint is the 883 plate on the intake...threw a 1200 plate on and it instantly felt faster
seriously though...i put on short shots, and a stage 1 intake (with 1200 logo) just because i cant leave stuff alone as others said.
i got the 883 because insurance is much less on it and when i do the 1200 or 1250 upgrade ill save the cost of it on 1-2 years insurance rates and ill have something i can say i built.
just wish i had the 48 mid glide front end and rims.

I went from a wide glide to the 883r and I never feel like I need any more. . . except it does get a little vibrating at 70mph for extended periods.
Can someone provide a simple explanation of the upgrade to 1200? The local stealer offers a package every winter for I think $1K. I believe it is just replacing the pistons and heads.
Are there other issues that will occur down the line with upgrading?
