I spent the last week reading alot of the posts and found I need valve guides, the bike smokes when I first start it up. Will riding the bike cause further damage? I plan on getting the top end rebuilt after the new year.
Also, I would like to replace the rear wheel and would like to know what year rear wheels will fit this bike without any major mods
Chris

No harm done beyond maybe carboning things up and having to perhaps replace fouled plugs. Beyond that, no physical damage will occur.

EDIT: I reread your question and saw that "the bike smokes when I first start it up". Absolutely nothing to worry about, as Mick says below. Probably no fouling to be concerned with either, if it's only on starting. Time will tell.

Welcome from Georgia!

Smoke on startup is common on gently worn out engines. IMO not something to be concerned about.

Welcome from the corrupt state of NJ.
Just take your time deciding what you really want it to look like to avoid major hangups.
