Ironhead Anyone have any luck selling IH parts

It seems like not a whole lot of people have bikes this old and want the parts since they don't fit. I didn't get any responses to my craigslist ad and can't be bothered with ebay.

I have 2 gas tanks (one with 2 dents in it), a rear fender (also dented) a set of handlebars, a 70's style 2 up seat, a sissy bar, and a front fender; that i'd gladly take 150 dollars for everything as long as you come and take this stuff; otherwise I feel just like throwing it in the garbage.

I recently moved and have a lot in storage. These junk parts take up all the room and are just junk as far as i can tell. Bondo works wonders and I like the mods the po did the fenders. He put different ones on there not the boxy oem ones you see on the '81. i'd just as soon repair those with bondo than use the oem ones in case of an accident.

I guess I'll put the tanks on fleebay & get a nice chunk of change otherwise I'm throwing this sh*t out. Anyone have a story where they held out and made some money on IH parts? I live in NYC . . .

I have had good luck selling my exta IH parts on e-bay. Just shipped out the original front end off my '77 to a guy in Colorado this morning. Ebay can be a bit of a pain, but it opens up your parts to a lot more people than the local Craigslist. Hell, I even buy things off my local Craigslist and resell it on ebay. I will take the easy extra cash....

It seems like a pretty fickled market and I suppose it also depends on what you're selling and what kind of shape it's in. Tanks and fenders are pretty common, so, selling dented ones may take longer.

I watched an old style backrest on ebay. I didn't have the money to buy it before the listing ended. Nobody bid on it, the guy relisted it, I didn't have the money, nobody bid on it. He relisted it again and I thought, "great, now I finally have the cash for this thing nobody cares about it, I'll get it". I set my high bid and forgot about it. Sure enough, someone bid $1 dollar more for it and I didn't get it . It's weird game.

If you're stuff is really junk put it up as a "lot" of parts on ebay, let someone bid on the whole deal and be done with it.

I have been selling some stuff on ebay. None rare run of the mill parts. Most sell at 1 bid, which seems to tell me I'm setting the starting price just about right.

If you really want to get rid of the stuff, start the bidding at a buck on ebay. That will always bring in some bottom feeders.

Been buying and selling on Ebay for 6 or 7 years now. Learned that Ebay is a better place to buy then to sell. Everyone is like me, they go on Ebay looking for a bargin.
I have tried to sell rebuilt heads, engines, frame parts etc, and I have sold alot of this stuff, but it has had to be real cheap, and is usually not a money making deal on my part.
The British stuff is an extra pain in the butt because 95 percent of it goes over seas, and the US post office in a pain all by itself.
I did sell and ship a BSA motor on Ebay, but UPS destroyed it while it was in transit.
I am finishing up a ironhead motor, and will list it locally to try and make some money ,and to keep from having to build a indestructable crate to ship it in.
Ebay is a much larger market, and if I have to, I will build the crate.

I live in Australia so I KNOW just what a pain shipping is. Bear in mind it's the buyers who PAY for it. I sometimes pay more in postage than what the item costs me.
But I've been buying off ebay for about 8 years now. Not a bottom feeder b/c I can't aford to buy junk and pay the shipping.
But guys, let's face it. If it IS junk, then it IS junk. If I take a dented tank to a shop to have it fixed properly, the shop will charge me more than the price of a new tank.
Have you checked the price for chromeing these days ? That's if you can get it done properly in the first place.
And my time and money to clean, strip, paint, retap threads etc etc etc makes junk,- junk.
But look at the prices some people are getting for things like NOS tanks, chainguards tacho's etc.
IH parts are worth something to everyone. But you'll find overseas buyers will generally pay more for GOOD stuff.
And pulling a bike down to every last nut and bolt and then asking people to pay $10 for a bolt or a nut is just nuts. Example, I am looking for a couple of the studs that go into the cases on a 67 CH and hold the bottom oil tank mount. On e-bay I find a set of second hand ones for - wait for it ! - $49. Come on guys, get real.
